Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition Annual Outing, Brattleboro VT

Brattleboro will be the setting for the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian
Coalition’s annual outing on Saturday, September 11. All are
welcome to attend this free event. Participants will gather at the
Centre Congregational Church on Main Street at 9:00 am, choose
a guided bike ride or walk, go off on different adventures, return
to share a potluck lunch, and hear what the Coalition is planning
for the coming year. Those who don’t want to bike or hike can
participate in a conversation about bike/ped issues that will be
facilitated by VBPC Board President Judy Bond. Mollie Burke,
a Progressive who represents Brattleboro in the Vermont House
of Representatives, will speak about her work with the Coalition
to get the “Safe Passing” bill signed into law. Please plan to
attend and have a grand time with other bike/ped supporters.

MS Global Ride with Tyler Hamilton

I would like to let BCC members know about an exciting - and very important - cycling opportunity coming up in September.

MS Global is a week long ride and is the major fundraising event of the Tyler Hamilton Foundation. This year's ride begins in Massachusetts and ends in Vermont. The ride has significant sponsorship already and its benificiary is the Accelerated Cure Project for Multiple Sclerosis.

As part of this years event, selected bicycle shops from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont have agreed to sponsor a raffle.

Highlander Cycle in Bennington is helping us locally. Tickets are only $10, with a limit of 50 to be sold.

The winning ticket holder will be invited to ride one of the stages of this year's tour between 9/14 and 9/18. Riders will include people with MS and the ride is lead by Olympic Gold Medalist Tyler Hamilton. The rides will be fully supported and a truly special experience.

Along with supporting MS Global, this effort reaches close to home in Bennington. A local resident has been combating MS, using cycling to build her strength and helping to deal with the challenges of MS as best she can. Buy your ticket for only $10. You have a 1 in 50 chance of winning a fabulous ride while supporting Lin and MS Global.

Saturday Morning Ride

From Tom's house at 7:30, we'll head over Searsburg to Readsboro, then south along the Deerfiled to Monroe Bridge MA. We'll climb one of the toughest climbs in the 50 states to the top of the Hoosac range, then back to No Adams and home again. A description from Bicycling magazine describes Kingsley Road as:

Mile 0.0-0.5, Monroe Bridge, Massachusetts--19.2%

The beginning of this half-mile climb is gentle, then the roof caves in and you battle a sustained grade near 20 percent all the way to the peak. For a reference on the tough-riding scale, keep in mind that the mighty Mt. Washington has only one section greater than 20 percent, and it is much shorter than Kingsley Hill. Massachusetts winters generally ensure that the pavement is in poor shape year-round, which increases the challenge. Most cyclists will need to stand and tack a bit from side to side to keep riding--and it's worth it because if you're forced to stop you won't be able to resume climbing without retreating to the bottom of the hill. Get There: Head west on Kingsley Hill Road directly off the main road, Monroe Bridge, in the tiny town of the same name. And don't be distracted by the climb directly opposite Kingsley Hill, which looks steeper at the bottom but is nowhere near as tough.

MAU HS Student Presentation

MAU HS student presentation at the UU Meetinghouse on School Street (red building behind The Lucky Dragon) in Bennington at 7:00 pm.

MAU HS Alternative Summer School Program was developed for a special group of at-risk students. These students had demonstrated their willingness to set and achieve higher goals as well as earning back school credits. As a group they bicycled to Montreal and back, visiting colleges and many important landmarks along the way. BCC's involvement directly followed our mission of choosing, giving back and supporting a community program every year.

The students who completed this trip, and the race up Mt. Equinox, will be doing a community presentation about their experiences on the trip to Montreal and back. They will be sharing photos and their personal stories.

They know that BCC has supported their program this summer financially. They need to know that we, the people within the community, care about their successes and the potential for their future. Please come and share their experiences.

Leaving from Tom's house at 7:00, we'll ride Brandon Gap to Midlebury Gap and back again. Get ready for some hill climbs!

Mountain bike ride! All riders should have off road riding experience. The ride is usually 1.5hrs and covers appoximatelty 10-15 miles with some climbs along the way.

Vermont Mountain Bike Festival

Group rides, kids rides, women’s rides, skills clinics, action workouts. All riders and all abilities welcome. Vendors, bike demos, live music, mountain bike movies, BBQ, raffles and prizes.

Check out the line up for this years festival.... shop vendors will include Onion River Sports (Montpelier), Five Hills Bikes (Waterbury), and Skier Shop (Stowe). With demo bikes from Specialized, Niner, Trek, Norco, Giant, Eastern Woods Research and Cannondale. Other supporters include Wilderness Trail Bikes, Smith Optics, Oakley, Nemo Tents and Equipment, Osprey Packs, and Gamut-USA, along with the Vermont Peanut Butter Company, Mocean Mate, Ben and Jerry's and The Alchemist.

Group rides will be led in Waitsfield by Dave Rowles and our friends from Stark Mountain Bike Works; with shuttle runs led by Knight and Lilias Ide from Ideride – bring your big bike and armor for that trip! Group rides will be held in Waterbury and Stowe, led by local guides from the Stowe Mountain Bike Club, with more group rides in Hinesburg, led by guides from the Fellowship of the Wheel – you’ve heard about the Preacher Trail in Hinesburg, right? Well this is your chance to ride it, with local gals and guys showing you the way.

We will have a womens’ skills clinic and trail ride in Waterbury led by the Girls Move Mountains - Dirt Divas Program, there will be pre-ride stretches, warm-ups and workouts led by Mocean365, and there will be kids rides on the Waterbury trails led by Wheels Around Waterbury.

All-in-all, the 2010 festival is coming together very well, and it looks to big a much bigger event this year. Saturday afternoon entertainment will be provided by The Concrete Rivals, along with a BBQ and free Ben and Jerry's for everyone! On the Saturday night we will hold a party at the Reservoir Taproom in Waterbury, with free schwag, beer specials, mountain bike movies, and more live music.
